Blessed by the ever-changing seasons,
Nestled within the beauty of Myoko Akakura,
A historic inn bridges past and present.
The History of Kounkaku
Originally established in the middle of the Edo period as a hunting lodge for Lord Sakakibara of the Takada Clan, our inn has evolved alongside Akakura Onsen, celebrating its 200th anniversary in 2016.
During my grandfather's era, the inn expanded, and a panoramic bath was added to the top floor, offering an innovative experience that attracted many guests.
In 2012, in the year following the Great East Japan Earthquake, we demolished much of the main structure and temporarily closed. However, we preserved one of the original grand bath, "Korin-no-Yu," hoping that people would once again be able to enjoy it again someday. After much trial and error, we have decided to reopen the entire building as an private rental inn.
At Kounkaku, you can enjoy the spacious baths in complete privacy, without worrying about other guests. We hope you'll stay a few days to fully relax, unwind and refresh.

Facility Information
Kounkaku is an exclusive, one-group-per-day, whole-building rental inn. Of the 90 square meters of this single-story facility, 26 square meters are dedicated to a natural hot spring bath, accommodating up to four guests. It's designed for leisurely extended stays.
While meals are not provided, a full service kitchen allows you to enjoy your favorite meals at your own convenience.
Additionally, with prior reservation, dining plans are available at nearby inns or specially selected restaurants in Myoko City. (Please inquire for details)
The Bath
Experience our most recommended feature—the huge, panorama bath. With a capacity of 7 cubic meters, our bath is continuously filled with abundant natural hot spring water, allowing you to enjoy a truly relaxing soak.
We’ve preserved the original design of the bath from the former Kounkaku, which might evoke a sense of nostalgia.
Additionally, we provide high-quality amenities such as Refa showerheads and Haru shampoos, all selected with the comfort of your skin and body in mind.
Terrace
The space that was once an outdoor bath has been transformed into a spacious terrace.
It’s perfect for enjoying the evening breeze in the summer and is beautifully blanketed in snow during the winter.
Bedding
We offer two custom-made semi-double flat beds crafted from Japanese cedar by Hinoki Works (https://www.hinoki-works.co.jp/). Cedar wood is known for its strength and the stress-relieving, relaxing effects of its aromatic essential oils. Additionally, our bed mattresses and futons, provided for groups of three or more, feature airweave mattresses (https://airweave.jp/) and seasonal bedding, ensuring a deep and restful sleep experience.
Chairs
Our desk chairs are White Wood Dining Hold Chairs from Nissin Mokko (https://muku-store.com/). These chairs are both sturdy and lightweight, making them easy to move. The gently curved backrest gently cradles you as you sit, offering a comfortable and supportive seating experience.
We have also thoughtfully curated a range of additional amenities filled with our dedication and attention to detail.
An Ideal Setting for Leisure, Adventure, and Wellness
Whether you're looking to relax and unwind with our hot springs over an extended stay, use the Inn as a base for sightseeing and activities, or spend quality time with your family in a therapeutic setting, Kounkaku is the perfect place in the perfect setting.
For however you choose to spend your time, we provide free Wi-Fi and a fully equipped kitchen, as well as a washer-dryer and other amenities to ensure a comfortable stay, whether for a few days or for a longer visit.
For those looking to spend time reading books, watching DVDs, or engaging in hobbies such as crafts and painting, we provide a desk, reading lamp, and various other conveniences including a projector compatible with multiple devices, a DVD player, and a stereo system to play your favorite music and help you relax. Of course, these amenities can be used for work, too, in this stress-free environment.
For guests visiting during the spring to autumn seasons for sightseeing, trekking, or climbing, as well as for those coming in winter to enjoy skiing and snowboarding, we provide a rack in the entrance for storing backpacks, poles, gear, skis, boards, and boots. Additionally, our facility is just a 5-minute walk from the nearest entrance to Akakura Onsen Ski Resort, allowing you to fully enjoy winter leisure activities.
For guests recovering from illness, surgery, or elderly family members seeking to relax in the hot springs, we have minimized indoor steps as much as possible. The bath is spacious, allowing for a comfortable experience without concern for other guests. We also provide handrails and a shower chair for added convenience.
